I have learned how to make chunky blue cheese salad dressing and I’m so glad I did. I’m really tired of trying brand after brand of store-bought and being dissatisfied!
Now I’m making it sound hard when I say I learned how. Actually it’s really easy. It just took me a long time to give it a try.
I did go through several attempts with adjustments before I arrived at this recipe. Even though my very first attempt had me convinced that I should have done this a long time ago!
If you are a blue cheese dressing fanatic like me and you’re just as unhappy as I was about store-bought dressing then you absolutely must give this recipe a try.
What is blue cheese dressing made of?
The star of the show in any blue cheese dressing recipe is, of course, the blue cheese. The body ingredients are mayonnaise and sour cream. The balance of the ingredients is lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, dry mustard, a little garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 2/3 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
- 4 ounces blue cheese finely crumbled
Steps to Make It
Gather the ingredients.
Whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, mustard, garlic powder, pepper, salt and half of the crumbled blue cheese in a food processor . With the food processor running add buttermilk until you have the consistency you desire.
Once this is thoroughly mixed, stir in the balance of the crumbled blue cheese; cover and refrigerate at least 8 hours before serving. Overnight is even better.
Taste for and adjust seasoning with salt and fresh-ground black pepper.
How Long Does Chunky Blue Cheese Dressing Last?
The answer to that question in my house is “not very long”, but if you’re wondering how far ahead you can make it then about 6 to 7 days. There are no added chemical preservatives in this like store-bought but it will stay fresh for a while.
Can You Freeze Salad Dressing?
My short “smart aleck” answer to this question is that you can freeze anything, but I know what you mean. Is it good to use after freezing?
The base of this chunky blue cheese dressing is dairy. The cheese and the sour cream are both dairy products. On top of that, the mayonnaise is mostly just eggs and oil. None of these freeze well.
The problem is not freezing… It’s thawing. When dairy is frozen and thawed it will separate. Unfortunately, it is then separated for life. There’s not a trick in the cooking world that will put them back together again!
So just don’t do it!
Alter this recipe to make just what you’ll use up in a week or so and then just make a new batch when that’s gone.
It’s not wise to try and freeze chunky blue cheese salad dressing!
